A trademark is a sign, or combination of signs, capable of distinguishing the goods or services of one undertaking from those of other undertakings.Trademark registration process begins with an optional search to assess availability of the mark, followed by filing of an application. The application undergoes a formal and substantive examination, and where it does not meet requirements, a provisional refusal is issued with a 30-day period for the applicant to respond. If accepted, the mark is published for opposition purposes. In the absence of opposition or where disputes are resolved in favor of the applicant, the trademark is registered for a renewable term of 10 years.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) a patent is "a document which describes an invention which can be manufactured, used, and sold with the authorisation of the owner of the patent. An invention is a solution to a specific technical problem."

A copyright is a set of exclusive rights granted to the author or creator of an original work, including the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work. These rights can be licensed, transferred or assigned.

An industrial design concerns the appearance of a product resulting from its visual features. An industrial design may be registered if it meets the requirements for protection provided by law. Registration gives the owner protection over the registered industrial design in accordance with the law.

A utility model protects an invention that meets the requirements for utility model protection under the law. Registration grants the right holder protection over the registered utility model in accordance with Law No. 055/2024 of 20/06/2024 on the Protection of Intellectual Property.
